When the sixth seal is opened by Jesus Christ, John sees some amazing events predicted by the prophets long ago.
The worldwide catastrophe that will take place. Earthquakes have occurred often in the past and with increasing frequency in the latter half of the twentieth century and the early 21st century. They have caused enormous devastation, with thousands killed and multitudes left homeless. Earthquakes reveal our helplessness and produce great anxiety and fear.
This particular earthquake is described as “a great earthquake.” It coincides with changes in the heavens and remarkable alterations on the earth's surfaces. When earthquakes, fires or tornadoes, or volcanoes do their thing, it wreaks havoc on the environment and the natural daily processes of the earth.
What is the extent of the catastrophe in the sixth seal judgment?
What is the potential explanation for this catastrophe? Among pre-millennialists, there are three significant viewpoints about the catastrophic events of the sixth seal judgment:
1. It refers to the earthquake that occurs at Christ’s return at the end of the tribulation.
2. It refers to the earthquake that was predicted in Ezekiel 38:19.
3. It refers to a particular earthquake that will happen at the beginning of the tribulation.
One thing is for sure; this earthquake will breed tremendous concern of the people of earth. The entire population is in a panic! World leaders and rulers have no answers but are filled with fear and the rest of the population. During His earthly ministry, Jesus likewise spoke of this coming day of judgment:
“There will be signs in the sun, moon, and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.” (Luke 21:25-26).
There is no more significant issue to face than eternal life and escaping God's coming wrath.
Our present generation has no desire to hear of these things or to believe them. We want to be stroked and reminded of our self-worth and potential for success. The real issue has not changed-heaven, hell, life, and death. Where will you spend eternity? If we don’t deal with it now in our time, we will do it in God’s time. Which would you rather do?
PRAY. PREPARE. PROTECT. PROCLAIM. PERSIST. PERSEVERE. PRAY AGAIN. PASS IT ON. POWER UP. POSITION PROPERLY. PAY ATTENTION. PRAY WITHOUT CEASING.
